Brace care

Brace care

While you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, it is absolutely vital to take great care of your teeth and gums. If you do not follow our advice, you could permanently damage your teeth, and/or we may have to cease treatment.

To avoid damage to your brace, you need to avoid anything hard or chewy – toffee is definitely a no-go- area! If you want to eat chewy bread or apples, cut them into small pieces instead of biting into them. Avoid biting your nails, crunching ice and chewing gum, and do not eat between meals.

You will need to clean your teeth and gums thoroughly after each meal. We will advise you how best to do this, but in essence it will involve carefully cleaning around all the wires, and ensuring you brush the gums as well as your teeth.

It is vital that you see your own dentist for routine check-ups during your course of treatment.
